Christmas is coming, one of the most wonderful times of the year. The house is filled with decorations and lights that make it feel more homely than ever. If you want to do something with the children but you don’t know how to make Christmas decorations, take a look at our suggestions.

Christmas cookies to hang on the tree

Kids love making things they can eat. So cookies make great Christmas tree decorations. Have more fun by making the recipe together. You will need:

• 2¼ cups pastry flour

• ½ cup sugar

• 2½ tablespoons Carbonell extra virgin olive oil

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• 2 large eggs

• The zest of 1 large lemon

• Fresh thyme

How to make edible Christmas decorations First, beat the eggs with the sugar. Then add the lemon zest, along with 4 sprigs of fresh thyme and the extra virgin olive oil. Make sure you mix all the ingredients well.

Separately, sift the flour and baking powder; then, little-by-little, add them to the mixture, while continuing to stir. When the ingredients are well mixed, cover the dough with Saran wrap, and leave it to rest in the refrigerator for half an hour.

Then, on a clean surface and using a little flour, roll out the dough. The ideal thickness of the dough is about half an inch. When your dough is at the right thickness, gather together your Christmas themed cutters: reindeer, trees, globes or stars - whatever you want! And then cut out the cookies.

Bake the cookies at 350ºF for 14-15 minutes. While they are still hot you can make a small hole with a pin so you can thread the cooled down cookies with yarn for hanging on the tree.

Last but not least, decorate with colored icing. They will look great!

Activities advent calendar

To make Christmas decorations that excite children, you just have to enter their world. An activities advent calendar is a great idea. For that, you need 25 activities, one for each day; write them on a piece of card and put the card in an envelope that you can decorate and hang on a tree branch. The finish is rustic and beautiful!

Some ideas for activities are: going to the movies, making mini pizzas, decorating the tree, putting up the nativity set, playing a game, going for a hike, making a cake… Whatever you can think of!

Gift wrap

If you’re still not sure you know how to make Christmas decorations, another possibility is to take a large roll of kraft paper and decorate it with Christmas motifs using crayons or Christmas stamps and paint. Then you can cut the decorated paper and use it to wrap gifts. This will make two gifts in one: the wrapping paper itself and the gift inside. Painting is an activity that’s always a winner with children.

Remember, when it comes to making Christmas decorations, what matters most is creativity. Children enjoy activities they’re not used to. I’m sure if you make our decorations with them, they will remember it always.
