Fats are essential to our health and there are marked differences between different kinds of fat: some are unhealthy and others are essential for our wellbeing. What is the difference between saturated fat and unsaturated fat?

Saturated fat

Most saturated fats come from animal fat and processed foods, such as butter, sausages, fatty meat and mass-produced pastries. Saturated fat is bad for the body (especially if we eat a lot of it) because it raises blood cholesterol levels, which means that eating saturated fat puts our cardiovascular health at risk.

Unsaturated fat

Knowing the difference between saturated fat and unsaturated fat is fundamental to being healthy because saturated and unsaturated fats affect us in opposite ways. Unsaturated fat helps to lower the type of cholesterol that is harmful to the body. Unsaturated fat derives mainly from plants. For example: extra virgin olive oil, olives, avocado, and dried fruit. Other sources of this kind of fat are white meat and oily fish.

It’s important to realize that there are two groups of unsaturated fats: monounsaturated fats, representing Omega 9, and polyunsaturated fats, representing Omega 3 and Omega 6. It is essential to consume both kinds.
